We all know it's important to encourage children's interests. But Maryland mom Charmaine Britt took support to a whole new level when she gave her daughter Breana Britt the green light to start her own baking business five years ago---- when “Bree” was just 12 years old. “She kept asking me, so I finally said, 'Well, you can start it online with you baking and me doing deliveries(运送)and we’ll see how it goes,'” Charmaine, 38, said.

Things went well. The now 17-year-old Bree's Sweet Treats had grown from a little online cupcake-and-cookie business became a full-service bakery plus café that delivers to the entire Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. “She makes great baked goods so I just thought it could be a good way to help her become financially responsible,” says Charmaine. “I never thought it would become this.”

Bree, on the other hand, said she never had any doubts. “I love doing this,” says the junior. “And I just think, if I’m doing something I love, I may as well make money.” Bree makes about $1,500 a month.

(C) My Year Abroad This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.

Mariko Okada – Tokyo

My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned many English songs and lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.

Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro

I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!

Alvin Chen – Hong Kong

Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went. 36. Where did Mariko visit?

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.

A small piece of these even knocked a spaceship window and caused some damage(损坏).

Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working to deal with space rubbish. Although space is really dangerous, it interests many people on the earth. In the near future, it may be possible for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should do something to help improve the space environment.

41. Which of the following shows the man-made things in space in the correct way?

42. To spacemen, the radiation from the sun and other stars is . A. good B. helpful C. useful D. harmful

Sample writing:

These days, our class are having a hot discussion about studying abroad. As I know, it has both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, students in foreign countries may have less homework, so they can have more free time. What’s more, there are fewer people in these countries so the air will be cleaner and the environment will be better.

However, studying abroad is really expensive. I must do some part-time to make money for my daily use. Besides, if I go abroad, I will have to leave my family and be far away from my

friends. If so, can I study well and will I feel happy?

My parents do not have much money and I don’t want to stay too far away from them. So in my opinion, it’s better for me to go on studying in my own country. This is my choice, will you agree with me?

三、阅读(共两节,满分45分)

第一节 阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分) A These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year”between their graduation from school and their university studies. This means they can take a year off to do something else, before they start their studies.

For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favorite activity --- and Australia is the favorite place to go.

Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values.

“After a year of travelling, I felt I’d grown up. I had learnt the importance of relationships with people, on all kinds of levels.”

There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects---helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills---decision making and finding answers to problems, for example---that will help many students in a job one day. Finally, getting some knowledge and experience in an area you hope to study or work in one day will always be very useful.

If several university graduates are applying for the same job, gar year work experience allows you to say,

“ I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can get your job.

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade. I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons

go through.

When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism . He sometimes had random outbursts(随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.

Then one day,Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.

After this talk,no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us. My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

Now whenever I meet a family with a child who's behaving differently,I always remember what I have learned in my third grade clams and go up to him or her.

You know how much your telephone has changed over the past 10 years? Your car will change even more than that in the next 10 years. One of the biggest changes is that cars will drive themselves.

“We certainly have the technology for it now.”says Andrew Poliak of automotive(机动车辆的)technology supplier QNX.“We expect self-driving cars to be a mainstream thing between 2020 and 2025.”

The American company Google has been working on self-driving cars for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States and are truly self-driving. They have to steering wheels(方向盘)or pedals(踏板). Last week, the police ordered one of Google's cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. The car was not breaking any law, so no one was punished.

Another American company, Tesla, added an “Autopilot” feature to its cars last month. With the Autopilot turned on, the vehicle drives itself. The car will speed up, slow down, brake and drive by itself. You can take over driving any time by turning the steering wheel or touching a pedal. The car uses sensors to know when driveway changing is safe and whether it should speed up or slow down.

Tesla Autopilot is made for cross-country driving. It keeps you in the driveway and helps you avoid hitting other cars. It does not work well on local roads, for it will not stop at a red light or stop sign.

Reporter Carolyn Nicander Mohr tried the Autopilot feature of a Tesla earlier this month. She had a hard time trusting the car to do what it should do. She thought about disabling the Autopilot feature many times during her trip. She wanted to take control at every bend in the road and hit the brake when the car in front of her slowed down. Yet the car drove perfectly.

Other companies are working on self-driving cars, too. Marcedes-Benz, Audi, BMW.Volvo and Toyota all have plans for such vehicles.

Did you know? Box-office monster “Zootopia” has been called the “most Easter egg-packed(彩蛋) movie ever made by Disney”. One of its Easter eggs comes to the species of the news anchor seen on the film’s ZNN channel. Depending on where in the world you’re watching “Zootopia”, the type of animals hosting may change.

Zootopia went a step further to make the different versions . In the US, Canada, France, the news anchor is moose. In Brazil, it’s a jaguar. Australia and New Zealand get a koala; while Chinese audiences see a giant panda.

What can I say…. I’m a huge Disney fan. Maybe not like my friend over at Reviewing All 54 Disney Animated Films. And More!, the Disney cartoons have been a big part of my life. So, in a sense, the Disney animated features are a big deal to me.

Whether young or old, Zootopia’s story carries a powerful and thematic commentary message that’s highly valued and relative (especially in today’s world). As Judy Hopps says in the movie “Life’s a little bit messy. We all make mistakes. No matter what type of animal you are, change starts with you.” And I can’t agree more with that statement.

( )41. In the film, the animal hosting turns into a ___________ if you live in Sydney.

A. koala B. giant panda

C. moose

D. jaguar

A. Jared Bush B. Rich Moore
